Melting in Florence....May 25, 2009 & June 8, 2009

It's so hot. I think I am melting. Granted I have room 'to melt', but it's a pretty miserable process. To stay cool my roommate Kelly dumps buckets of cold water on my head. It works for about 3 seconds, then I am hot again. Taking a shower is pointless.

I am moving this week. I have a new apartment. My lease was up here so we are going our separate ways...

PAUSE

So I started this blog last week, and am now finishing it. I seem to suck at this blog thing...but I am trying. I don't have an excuse now with all my free time...so...here goes.

My friend Espen and I got a new apartment. But he was out of the country when I got it, and hates it. So we are moving again next week. I hate moving here, you use taxis...and that isn't fun. But I might have some connections to a car, one can only hope. The apartment we are moving to is pretty cool, and very close to the city center (the one we are in now is a bit off). It does not have the bitchin patio my first place had, but it will do. It has an amazing kitchen, just what my big bootie needs, but its pretty off the charts.

Once we move I will feel much more at ease...knowing you will move, its hard to relax. My cousin Aimee is coming the 22nd of June. I am meeting her in London for a few days, as that is where she is flying in. Then we are heading to Rome for a few day, then down to the Amalfi coast to get some much needed SUN! We will also be coming up to Florence for a few days to stay at my new place and see the sites. I am SO excited to have a familiar face coming to visit. I have not been too terribly homesick, had a few rough days, but surprisingly for the most part I have been okay. It will just be nice to have someone from home here. Plus, I know Aimee and I will have an amazing time showing Italy how we do it!

I went to the coast a few weeks ago with a bunch of friends. We just went for the day....we went to a beach just outside of Florence, close to Pisa called Viareggio. I was so excited to see the sea, dip my feet in the cold blue water and get a tan. Much to my dismay it was disgusting. :( The water was more a dirty gray, tons of garbage, stinky and warm...not at all what I thought a beach outside of Florence would be like. We had fun all the same, but it was kind of a let down. I know in a few weeks I will get to see some amazing waters down in Amalfi, so that's good. It was funny, when we got there you can't really get to the beach. There are SO many hotels and resorts blocking off sections of the beach, you actually have to apy to lay there. We lucked out and made our way to the shore and found a spot that we should have paid for, but the guy there was super nice and let us stay as long as we picked up after ourselves. I think he looked like an Italian Mathew McConaughey...he was cute. There was this sign before we enetered the beach with all these no-no's. So many don'ts we wondered what we could do?

It was a good trip though, and I got to work on my tan, which is fading fast. It's been raining the last few days, which has made me homesick. The sun is finally coming out and I am hoping to walk to the park tomorrow and go for a little hike....but we shall see.

This coming Friday my friend Kelly, and old roommate, were invited to this dinner out in the country. You go to a sustainable farm in the area, and learn about what they do, it will be in Italian...but I am learning. If they make cheese, you learn how they make cheese. They might raise beef, so you learn different ways to cook it. They serve you a big meal and local wines from the area...outside on the farm. I am very excited. Kelly asked and it's mostly Italians that do this, not tourists. It happens every two weeks at different places throughout Tuscany. This Friday I believe we are going to a cattle ranch...all sustainable and organic. They will cook us a meal, I am guessing Bistecca Florentine, which I hear is basically raw meat...so we will see. I have yet to try it. There is also going to be someone form a local winery having us taste test all their wines...ones that have not gone to market yet. It should be fun and interesting, I am not sure how I will describe a wine in Italian? Questo vino ha molto buono....something like that...I think? This wine is very good...I don't think I could describe it as rich, fragrant, or nutty...they might think I am nutty...ha I am excited none the same and will take lots of pictures and make sure that I write about it ASAP....

Ah, I was just reminded of something. Reason number 534 why we are moving: So as I said before we are moving apartments, as Espen isn't the happiest here. It really is humerous if I look at it from a distance, if I don't I just get angry. So the apartment is sort of in the basement. Its to the back of this huge old building so it's underneath everyone else...but at ground level...if that makes sense. The building is higher on the street in front. Anyways, we share the same entry as these two guys...we even share the same buzzer...which is strange. But, the two guys that live 'above' us our opera singers. They are opera singers that seem to do nothing else but practice all day and night. It sounds like they are in our apartment singing...and it gets old fast. The other night they really went crazy and I was in my room and Espen in his. Espen yells over, "Do you think we need to call a doctor"...I was like "why?" and he says "Because it sounds like they are dieing...."...It was funny, particularly because English is not Espen's first language! I am attaching a little video so you might be able to hear, what we hear, 24 hours a day.
